Blog: Thoughts on Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival

It’s not a great game, but Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival is a fixture in my home. I actually expect at this point that we’ve played more of that game than pretty much anybody else. To be honest, it’s not a great game, but it has some interesting points and it’s a game I’ve spent a long, looong time thinking about.

I’d usually offer spoiler warnings at this point, but I’m not sure there really are spoilers for a party game like this. Additionally if there are spoilers, they’re for Animal Crossing in general or for Animal Crossing: New Leaf more specifically.

Things I Liked


I’m relatively new to Animal Crossing. I only picked up the series at New Leaf (the 4th game in the series, which came out in 2012). I picked it up after watching Chuggaconroy’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf Let’s Play. I bought matching 3DSs for my partner and I and two copies of Animal Crossing New Leaf. We got up extremely early on Boxing Day to watch the World Junior Hockey Championship, and started two new towns. I played New Leaf for well over a year, but eventually petered out as the new things to see in the game became fewer and fewer. My partner still plays at least a little bit each day (even with New Horizons to play as well).

The tradition keeps it going for us.


The town itself is an important part of any Animal Crossing game. Which villagers are in town, how the town is laid out, how the town is decorated are all important aspects. The town in Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival is also important. The game is played on a map of spaces spread out around a randomly generated town when you start playing. The different spaces in the game map to different events based on local fixtures so as you move around the map you get a few different experiences based on where you are. This provides a lot of familiarity as you swing by the coffee shop, or the bonfire, or the pool.

Events happen each time you land on a space. Each time you stop, a tiny vignette plays out with your character getting happier or making money, or getting sadder or losing money. The generic events are alright, but they don’t really hold the game in the long term. The events based on places around town are a nice addition, especially as your town grows, but the events that happen especially for specific characters have been the things that really charmed us. Having Blathers find fossils for the museum or Reese spend the day working with Cyrus makes the game charming and different enough each time you play it to keep it interesting. The special monthly events, like Festival, Toy Day or the August fireworks are also important and charming. We made a rule early on that we’d only play in the current month and that means that the time passing in real life is an important part of our enjoyment of the game.

The Amiibo Figures are also a nice part of Amiibo Festival. Getting to bring in villagers to live in the town (and host the games) is nice. Playing the game as the special villagers (such as Isabelle, Digby, etc…) is nice. The events provide them with a lot of character on top of whatever you bring in from other animal crossing games and the variety of costumes makes it worthwhile to keep playing.

I've had a K.K. concert running in my living room for the last three years.


Things I didn’t Like


While it has charm, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival seriously lacks things to do (let alone interesting decisions). It's probably worth noting, that my perspective is as someone who is not a kid and does not have kids, so my expectations are different than the developers. Still I feel like there are some elements of this game which aren't as good as they could be. The basic mechanic has you rolling a D6 to move around the board. When you reach a branch in the path, you can choose which direction you want to go. On top of that you can collect cards that let you go a specific number of spaces, do something special, like roll double or pick your roll, or change a few other aspects of the game.

The frustrating part is that there’s enough flexibility in what they designed that you could make interesting choices once a turn, or at least once every few turns.

I see that they want to have a heavy randomness in the game. The game has a strong “Snakes and Ladders” or “Candyland” flavour, in that your success in life is at the hand of bigger elements. Similarly, randomness is a staple of Mario Party, and it makes it easier for people of different skill levels to play together. However. I think they could have kept a lot of that randomness while still allowing the player to do a little more to control their own fate. A weekly card, along with the weekly turnips, would have gone a long way towards making this work. Or maybe a no-items, final destination configuration might also help for some long-term players.

Happiness in August


One of the other things that is somewhat frustrating about the game is that there’s no trade off between the two currencies in the game. You have bells (money) and you have happy points (happy … points). Sometimes you get events which give you both, just one, take one away or take both away. I have certainly traded happiness for money in my life and money for happiness, so it’s a little disappointing sometimes that the game has no trade-off option between the two. Especially as there are lots of in game events which seem like this would be the appropriate result. I spent a little extra money on my coffee today, and I really enjoyed it, is a “you lost money” event, rather than a “you lost money, but got happy” event.

The final thing that particularly frustrates me that I’d like to include here is that the game just stops. Well that’s not strictly true, so far as we’ve played the game continues, with different events each month, but the ability to grow your amiibo cuts off after level 6. I suppose that’s fair enough, but it feels to me a bit as though they didn’t have a lot of plans for people to play the game as long as we’ve played it.

Things I Noticed


The strength of Amiibo Fest is really in its charm. We’ve tried to play it a bit slowly, adding new things to the town infrequently and we’ve limited the number of animals we’ve added to the town too (which is partly due to a lack of the animals we want on the Amiibo Cards we were able to find).

Still despite the fact that this is a candy land style game, with a, you take the good with the bad and everything balances out mindset, we’ve managed to play about once a week for more than two years now. While that certainly says something about us, I think it also speaks to the way the game feels.

Obviously the Animal Crossing games in general are a testament to the idea that you can have many different verbs in gaming and that non-combative ones can be just as appealing. Amiibo Festival feels like a part of that dialogue, a game which focuses on togetherness beyond the game.

Things I’d Include in a Game


I have a lot of feelings about Amiibo Fest, but I don’t know that I want to, or could, create a game that follows it’s structure or design. That being said, I think the persistent environment of a board game that grows over time is very nice, especially if it can be managed in such a way that it has a narrative arc with an ending to it. Pandemic Legacy is a great game that you can play over many sessions and you build up a world with your history of mistakes and successes. I think having a gentler game that still builds up its own history as you play it is an interesting approach.

Remember Last Year?


I also think you could expand that to have a game grow over the course of a year and then have a giant celebration leading into a new game plus, new year kind of thing. That way you could have a new town grow up to follow your old towns each year, with some elements of the old towns kept around for nostalgia or remembrance and then new elements from your new town for the new year.

I was pretty flabbergasted when I saw The Runaway Guys tackle this and realized they were playing in a totally different town, and I think this game might have benefitted from making that difference a little more palpable. Obviously not everyone is going to want to step away from the town they have, but having a natural end might make it easier to decide when and how to end.

Final Things


I don’t know if Amiibo Festival could have been better. I won’t argue that the charm is reason enough to play, and if you’re looking for anything like a Mario Party experience you’re going to be disappointed. As I said, this is very much a Candyland experience. That being said, we still enjoy it and every time I play I'm struck that with just a little different construction it could have been a secret gem that really lasts.

I mean, how much charm can this game have?

Blog: Games of March 2020


Well that was a month. I went from a fairly normal semester, if one where I was struggling with workload a bit, to working from home and transitioning all my teaching to online. That caused a pretty radical restructuring of my life. Interestingly it hasn't really changed how much I've played, but it has adjusted how I've played. I'm trying (I guess as always) to be better about playing mindfully, and it is a bit of an effort to not pick up EU4 when it's available on the same desk I'm working on. Also making sure I can play for some escapism is important.

On top of that, the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out. That's been an interesting addition to the mix, because, as with all animal crossing games, it flows in real time and so it's worthwhile to play several different times in a day. That's tied in nicely with working from home and I've done a fairly good job of keeping it down to short stop ins on coffee breaks.

My top five games (by play time) for March were:
  1. Europa Universalis 4 - I'm continuing to enjoy the game, now that I actually understand what I'm doing to some extent. I've also started checking in on the Eu4 reddit from time to time and I'm starting to understand the game a little more broadly. It certainly fits the role nicely as some escapist entertainment and it's nice to have when I want to go somewhere else for a bit.

    This was fun while it lasted.


  2. Dragon Quest XI S - I thought I'd try to finish this up before Animal Crossing: New Horizons released. I didn't although I think I'm fairly close to the end now. I did finally reach the point where I was finding some interesting challenge and some interesting opportunities in the combat system to do interesting things. I still find that I don't like this as much as Dragon Quest VIII, but it certainly has a lot of upside.

  3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons - I realize that I was a bit dumb trying to finish Dragon Quest. This is an Animal Crossing game, and that means that it really doesn't benefit from going fast. I've been trying to limit the amount I play a little so that there's always something else new to think about and look forward too. It's a nice follow up to New Leaf, which I dropped a few years back, and it has some great game play and quality of life improvements. I'm not sure it's everything I'd hoped for, but it's a wonderful game and exactly the game everyone needs right now.

  4. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - The standard continues and still feels good in the New Horizon era. I'm actually putting together some thoughts about it, which I hope to post soon.

  5. Cursed Treasure 2 - And to think I thought the end of Adobe Flash was going to be the crisis of 2020 I was going to have to think about. As it happens IriySoft released a remastered version. Although I've discovered I don't like the remaster nearly so much as the original. Still it's nice to see that the game will live on. (And I'm sure I'll get used to it.)

Blog: Games of February 2020


February was another quiet month. I'm trying to get through Dragon Quest XI before ... things ... happen in March, and I've been feeling in that winter strategy mode which has left me playing quite a bit of EU4.


My top five games (by play time) for February were:
  1. Europa Universalis 4 - Several hundred hours in, I think I'm starting to get a feel for this game. One what is about by 11th attempt at an Ottomans game, I've figured out how to manage money and growth appropriately and I'm starting to get a feel for which wars I should fight when (and how many levels of tech I should have). I'm extremely proud of taking on a giant Austria (they ate Venice and Hungary) and forcing them to give up a lot of territory and money.

    This is fine.


  2. Dragon Quest XI S - I think the post-game is where this game actually shines. I'm having more fun now than I was for big parts of the main game. Having the correct difficulty is really important. I am a little disappointed that some of the personal growth the team goes through in the main game is undone in the post-game,

    This never happened.


  3. Cursed Treasure 2 - This continues to be my procrastination game, or hopefully the game I play for short bursts between getting work to be done. I ended up downloading Kongregate's Kartridge program so that I could keep playing it after Chrome stops allowing Flash to play. Not sure what I'm going to do about some of the other important flash games out there.


  4. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - That rainbow colour, it's Festival!

    This quiet moment.


  5. Super Mario Odyssey - Super Mario Odyssey continues to be a real delight to pick up and play.

    This is fun.

Blog: Games of January 2020


January was a little bit about catching up from last year. I finished the Chrono Trigger play through I started and finally finished up Dragon Quest. Both have a new game plus to tackle, so I'm not really done, but it's good to get some games finished.
My top five games (by play time) for January were:
  1. Dragon Quest XI S - I'm finding this one a little hard to keep going with. The story hasn't really grabbed me, but the grinding is fun and the game has just enough of that RPG build that I've had fun.

  2. Chrono Trigger - Still one of the best games of all time. I'm feeling a bit rusty with this play through, but I'm also trying to spice things up a bit and play with someone other than the Crono, Marle, Lucca power house.

  3. Europa Universalis 4 - Well, I've now experimented with running up as much debt as possible (well kinda), now I'm trying to see if I can go the other way.

    The Austrians are Coming to Eat Me.


  4. Super Mario Maker 2 - I haven't spent too much time making levels. I'm finding the switch interface a little harder to love. I think I've played enough that the weird artificial feeling I had earlier on has faded, but it does feel like it lacks a little bit of charm over all.

Blog: Games of December 2019


2019 was a long year (long decade?). So it was really nice to be able to chill at the end of the month and the end of the year.

My top five games (by play time) for December were:
  1. Chrono Trigger - I was a little bit inspired by Chuggaconroy playing this during the year, but also there's just something about the December break that calls for SNES games for me. I'm pretty fascinated at the number of things I've learned about Chrono Trigger, having played the game pretty consistently over the last two and a half decades.

    An adventure awaits.

  2. Dragon Quest XI - Continuing along, I enjoyed playing, but the game does feel a bit slow.

    Fight! 

  3. Cursed Treasure 2 - I love tower defence and out of all the free tower defence games available to play while avoiding marking this is the very best. I think I'm going to try to make my own TD game this year.

    In trouble, but happy.

  4. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - The tradition continues.

  5. Super Mario Odyssey - Out of all the games I played this year (more on that soon) this one is the one that calls to me the most to pick it up again. The game play and flow are enticing and it just always a joy to play.

Blog: Games of November 2019


As often is the case, November was pretty crazy, so I didn't play that much. My time went primarily to Luigi's Mansion 3 with a little bit of day-to-day play of Sunless Sea and Pogo. Now, I'm tired, but the semester is hitting its end point and I'm dreaming of some of the interesting things I can turn my time to in December.


My top five games (by play time) for November were:
  1. Luigi's Mansion 3 - I have super fond memories of the first Luigi's Mansion, what with it being the first game I played on GameCube. I really love the way it forms an interconnected world and an immersive environment that's really fun. Luigi's Mansion 3 seems to have a lot of those bones and is generally quite fun, but it feels a little bit short of a really engaging game.

    Ah, nothing haunting about this game at all.


  2. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - This came up in a list of most disappointing games of the decade I watched recently. Every time we play I do find myself thinking about all the little things they could have added to make this game amazing, but it just falls a little short of what you might want. On the other hand it has enough content spread out in such a way that we still find ourselves a little surprised most times we play and its an important part of our weekend mornings.

  3. Sunless Sea - My push to get better at Sunless Sea produced some interesting results. I definitely got to see more of the game and enjoyed the zen of sailing slowly across the vast(ish) unterzee.

  4. Europa Universalis IV - Most of my time came from a pretty chill Saturday at the end of the month. Every time I play I'm struck by the interesting balance of feeling of in control and out of control. I think for EU V they could do some streamlining of interfaces and some clarification about implications and consequences, but now I'm enjoying understanding what the flow of a war is likely to be before I actually start it. I've found it extremely beneficial to play on Iron Man because it causes you to follow through and see exactly how things happen.

    Never quite enough resources to take over the whole world.

  5. Pokémon Go - I'd have liked to get out a bit more, but didn't leave myself the time or mental space to really do so. I'm thinking even if the weather's a bit crappy in December I should put myself to doing a little more intentional play.

Blog: Games of October 2019

October was a month where I didn't really have a game I was setting out to play. I've hit a point where I'm a little tired of Three Houses. I played a lot of Dragon Quest as a game to relax with and then somewhat distracted myself with EU 4 a few days in the month. It's also been one of those months where I've found myself watching more things rather than playing, which is often a mid-semester thing for me.

My top five games (by play time) for October were:
  1. Dragon Quest XI - As a game to pick up in the evenings and play for a little bit, DQ XI has been great. The feel of the game is very good, even while I have some concerns with other factors about the game.

    Hello! Everything is fine! Perfect! Going exactly as expected.

  2. Europa Universalis IV - EU 4 has an amazing capacity for "fun", where in once things start going a little wrong they immediately explode into many things going very wrong. So a lot of my play time has been me trying to crush either the Papel Seat, England or Poland in retribution for the thing they did to me last time.

    Whelp. Time for another vendetta play through.

  3. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - October is probably the most interesting month to play Amiibo Fest. They introduce an extra candy collecting mechanics which has a roughly 50/50 success rate and means that you actually have to play with a little thought. We still play a bit on autopilot these days, but Amiibo Fest is still a weekend morning tradition for us.

  4. Sunless Sea - Mark Brown produced a video about rogue-likes talking about how the player skill and the difficulty curve interact. I am bad enough at most rogue-likes that I never really seem to see the game change. Lately I've been trying to improve how I play, or experience, or something, Sunless Sea. The story elements are still interesting, although I had a couple of captains die in quick succession, which broke a little of the illusion of continuity in the story structure.

    Perfect. Totally not doomed.


  5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Remember how I hadn't burned out on Three Houses last month? Well, now I have. The problem with the 4 endings the game has is that it does require a lot of replay of very similar missions and eventually it starts to feel like I've just done the same thing over and over again. The combat simply doesn't support the amount of story the game has and the reuse of maps is kinda disappointing, at least if you play the Golden Deer and the Blue Lions one after the other. The Black Eagles - Crimson Flower have definitely been more different so far, but I needed a break.

    Inconceivable!

Blog: Games of September 2019


September wasn't too exciting. I'm continuing my march through Three Houses, (2 endings down, 2 endings left) and I've started playing a little Dragon Quest XI. Other than that I'm trying to find a good balance between productivity, gaming for relaxation and gaming for excitement.

My top five games (by play time) for September were:
  1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses - It keeps going and going ... *Pink Rabbit Rolls Through Banging Drum*. This game could have turned into a total slog, but the actual game play has been fun enough that I've always been pretty happy to fire it up. Additionally the different stories for the three houses has made it really interesting to keep going. I'm planning one more play through now to finish the last ending. I'm also thinking of another play through to do some kind of 'perfect play through'.

    I think this is her problem summed up really.

    For my third play through I moved the difficulty back down so that I could play a little faster. I'm also playing the Black Eagles now, and I'm trying not to recruit any PCs from other houses (I did pick up a few, but just to ensure I have enough bodies on the field for the bigger missions). I really appreciate how different the Black Eagle story and missions are. I was a little disappointed with the similarities between the Golden Deer and the Blue Lions.

  2. Dragon Quest XI - I'm really enjoying Dragon Question XI. It brings back a lot of the things I've enjoyed about other DQs and it's refreshing. I think Tim Roger's review sums it up best for me. This is a game you can play at an easy pace, and just drift into it. There's enough game to keep me engaged, but not so much that it requires my full attention.

    And I've never been happier.

    It has some nice quality of life improvements over previous games. The ability to run quickly is nice (as is the collection of speedy mounts you can pick up. I've ended up adjusting the combat back to pretty standard for Dragon Quest, but I appreciate their attempt to spice up the combat and further the fact that I *could* switch it back. I'm looking forward to this as a nice long story with some funny accents and swords and magic.

  3. Super Mario Maker 2 - I haven't really gotten into SMM 2 the way I did to the first one. I'm not quite sure what I'm missing because they've made a lot of nice additions to the game. I think it may just be that my creative energy is pointed elsewhere right now. I also feel like the increase in quality of levels and the increase in styles/tools has resulted the levels feeling a little more standardized. I'm still enjoying it, but it hasn't been a must play.

  4. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - Our weekend standard continues. We're thinking we'll substitute in New Horizons some of the time when it comes out, but Amiibo Fest has been an important part of our quite time.

  5. Super Mario World (SNES on Switch) - This is the *weirdest* Super Mario Maker game. I think of the 2D Mario's this my favourite, but playing it again with the SNES online service, I'm struck but just how weird it is in comparison to all the other games. I've maybe played more of this game then any other (It's the very first game I bought for myself) and I've enjoyed picking it up again. In light of Super Mario Maker and a lot of common 'rules' for level development it feels very different, sometimes it feels unfair or weird, but generally I think it's fun. It's also a hefty dose of nostalgia.

    I'm amazed at how it feels like this game comes right out of the screen.

Blog: Games of August 2019


We could just call this post Game of August 2019, because I've played a lot of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I got sick, and it turns out that the switch is a great game platform to bring to bed, play until the battery runs out then sleep until the battery charges up again. Also Three Houses is really good.


My top five games (by play time) for August were:
  1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses - So yeah. I played 30 hours in a couple of days last month. This month I played more than a hundred hours. I've started on a third play through now. My first Golden Deer play-though was around 70 hours and my second Blue Lion's play-through was around 80 hours (there's a little discrepancy between my recorded time and what the save-game things I have recorded). The game play is compelling. My first play through was on normal, which was a little easy for a Fire Emblem game, especially when playing without permadeath. For my second play-though I moved the difficulty up to hard, which was a better feel overall, although some of the difficulty was in limiting repair of weapons rather than the actual tactical gameplay. The story is also very good and the different facets you see depending on which house you play and which support stories you build gives you a lot of reason to keep playing to understand more.

  2. Europa Universalis IV - It's been a little while, but I fired this up again needing a little break from Three Houses and I'm having a lot of fun. As usual (pretty much) I'm playing the Ottomans again, but the new mission structure is illuminating interesting things to do while playing.

  3. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival - Honestly should have played this more. August is the best in game month.

  4. Opus Magnum - The game is still very approachable, but the late story missions are a little more work than I feel like putting in right now. The missions from the Steam Workshop have been a nice follow up.

    Be fancy. Make potions.


  5. Pokemon Go - Didn't play that much what with not wanting to leave the house. I'm hoping to see the number for September be a lot higher.

Blog: Games of June 2019


My June was mostly dedicated to playing on the Switch. I'm really enjoying the ease of picking up the controller (or the console) and being into a game within second.

My top six games (by play time) for June were:
  1. Super Mario Odyssey - Thanks to this game I can now pretty regularly spell Odyssey. The more I've played the more I've gotten into it. I keep thinking I must be running out of fun (or at least Power Moons), but so far it just keeps showing more and more depth.

    In context, this doesn't make any sense either.

  2. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Fest - This usually doesn't land so far up the list, but my play time was pretty spread out this month. As always this is a nice way to wake up on weekend mornings with my partner and even though we basically know all the events by heart by now, it's still a charming thing to play.

  3. Xenonauts - Less charming, but no less fun. I am surprised by how long it took me to get into this game, but I have been pretty thoroughly enjoying it. The only real complaint I have at the moment is that I'm readier to end this campaign than the game seems to be. I think there's a little bit of pacing trouble between the missions you play and the research the game does for you that actually advances the plot. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the combat and I feel like they've arrived at a spot where "failure is fun". (But that might just also be my brain relaxing from the PhD).

    Oh sure, deal with my shotgunners by building all your ships like tubes...

  4. Cadence of Hyrule - This game is pretty awesome. I was really bad the first hour or so, but then found my groove (so to speak) and got the idea of the game. Since then I've really enjoyed it, although I find it needs a particular mindset to really appreciate (and because it's rhythm based, you can't drink and play well). I wouldn't mind if it had a little more meat on it, but I'm only about halfway through right now, so there may be more to come. I'm interested to see how it replays (it feels short) and I think I might also take a look at Crypt of the Necrodancer for the purer Rogue-Beat genre.

  5. Secret of Mana (Collection of Mana) - I was not spoiled on this, so when Nintendo announced the Collection of Mana in its E3 direct I pretty much fell out of my chair. Seeing Seiken Densetsu 3 released in English in North America is fantastic and so I bought it as soon as it was released (which was that night as I recall). I haven't played too much of either SD3 or SD (Final Fantasy Adventure) yet, but having Secret of Mana to hand has been a total blast. Also I discovered that the UK localization is very slightly different (and better?) than the US one.

  6. Pokémon Go - I really haven't spend that much time sitting down to play PoGo the last little while, but trying to keep streaks up, I've played a few minutes each day. That's been enough to get it into the top list for the month.
